Who we are

The Be Human principles have been formed and coproduced by people and partner organisations connected to In Control Partnerships. It’s a group of committed people who recognise the difficulties in today’s society where people are being treated less than human in a variety of settings. we’ve all had the experience of being treated like a cog in a machine; automated responses, unfeeling customer service, institutions with impenetrable rules and regulations, confusing systems and bureaucracy, the ‘computer says no’ mentality.

The inhumane treatment of people doesn’t just happen in big institutions but takes place at a much more discrete and minor level every day in ordinary everyday places.

Industrial systems and treating people as commodities is bad for society.

On top of the ‘normal’ barriers to getting support for daily living, we are constantly confronted with inaccessible systems, being sent down rabbit holes, payment delays and associated worry, stress of not understanding things, lack of opportunity to speak to someone directly and the overwhelming complexity of it all. The cumulative effect is extremely damaging to society’s health and well-being, certainly to anyone who is older, has a long-term health condition, or is more vulnerable e.g. to potential scams. With added pressures on families alongside reductions in support from the NHS and welfare services, we believe it is everyone’s responsibility to look out for each other and help where we can. Therefore we have established a movement to positively encourage a better approach and attitude in all organisations. We fundamentally believe people would rather help than hinder people and that often tricky systems can get in the way of this. So by creating principles we aim to help people in organisations take a good look at what they are doing, how they doing it and talk about how they could improve things based on these principles.

The principles were created by a vast group of citizens across the UK who had experience (direct or research) into what made organisations feel more humane to those working or receiving goods or services from them.

The leader of this movement is YOU!

Co ordination and host of the movement is via In Control Partnerships

"The 'Be Human' principles really helped us when we were setting up our Practice Framework for adult social care in Doncaster. We used them to describe the values and behaviours we'd need to adopt if we were going to achieve our purpose: for people in Doncaster to live in the place we call home, with the people and things we love, in communities where we look out for each other, doing the things that matter to us. The principles are great to revisit from time to time, to ensure we haven't lost track of what's important"
"Managing someone’s money is never just about numbers – it’s about trust, dignity and helping people live the life they choose. The Be Human principles remind us that behind every account is a person with hopes, relationships and decisions that matter. By putting humanity, respect and partnership at the centre of how support works, Be Human strengthens the relationship between people who draw on support and those trusted around them. That can only lead to better outcomes and greater control for the people we serve.”
"At Simple Stuff Works we're proud to stand with organisations who choose to be human; not just in the easy moments, but in the messy, complex, real-life ones too. Huge thanks to Julie Stansfield BCAc and the incredible team at In Control for everything you've championed over the years. Your values shine. We stand by kindness, honesty, presence and genuine humanity in the way we all how up .” #BeHuman #HumanRights #SocialCare #PeopleFirst #SimpleStuffWorks
